U-pick (also called "pick-your-own" or PYO) is a farm model where customers come to the farm, pick produce themselves, and pay for what they harvest. Most common for strawberries, blueberries, apples, pumpkins, and cut flowers — crops where untrained pickers can do minimal damage.
For farms, u-pick shifts labor to the customer and often supports experiential pricing (higher per-pound rates than wholesale). For customers, it's typically the lowest-cost way to buy high-volume produce (jam-making strawberries, fall apples for cider), plus the ancillary benefit of a farm visit.
